ROCK 'N ROLL
Hampstead Theatre
1968: Russian tanks have rolled into Czechoslovakia, and Syd Barrett has been dumped by Pink Floyd. Jan, a visiting postgrad at Cambridge, breaks with his old professor Max, a Marxist philosopher, and heads home to Prague with his suitcase full of “socially negative music”. Rock ’n’ Roll covers the ensuing 21 years in the lives of three generations of Max’s family while Jan is caught in the spiral of dissidence in a Communist police state. Spending the whole of act 1 in the late 60s/ early 70s this play was a wonderful challenge in bringing the 70s to life in a way that feels authentic. The collection of costumes I curated for Rock 'n Roll is filled with soul and story. From a pair of shoes that once belonged to a ladies wheelchair bound grandma and never touched the floor before we put them on Gillian, to an authentic 70s indian block printed silk gauze dress that looks exactly like the dress Anna designed for Lenka these clothes are infused with life. In act 2, we travel forward in time to the end of the 80s to 1990. Following the same principle we went for preloved pieces that are inbued with character and texture. Without compromising on Anna's original vision. Designs: Anna Reid Photo's: Manuel Harlan
