Telling stories through costume...
OPERA SCENES
Royal College of Music
As part of the curriculum at the Royal College of music the vocal students present some of opera's greatest moments in a series of staged scenes. 10 vastly different scenes are presented as part of one show. Director Saffron Van Zwanenberg was keen to set the scenes on a 1940s filmset. This became a beautiful backdrop to an array of colourful characters one might expect to find working on a film lot. We follow the film studio's caretaker and resident handyman through the scenes. Here we see him dreaming of being in the movies himself. Pictured below are a couple of the colourful characters we meet working on the film lot. In La Serva Padrona we envisioned Serpina as a clapper girl who is hopelessly in love with young filmproducer Uberto. In a hilarious duet she tries (and succeeds) in winning his heart. One of my personal favourites was reimagining Rusalka's sprites as glamourous, mischievous cleaning ladies who can't resist a good gossip and a nosey through the beautiful costumes before being caught by their sketchy maffia boss. In Der Schauspieldirektor we meet two singers vying for the same role and doing whatever they can to convince the director that they deserve the lead.
