MARIE CURIE MUSICAL
Charing Cross Theatre
Marie Skłodowska-Curie. Physicist, pioneer and parent. A story of life and death, ‘Marie Curie’ is brought to London audiences for the first time in a stirring original production directed by Sarah Meadows. As per Rose Montgomery's designs we strove to find a balance between what felt true to the time, and translating that for the modern eye. One of my favourite costume pieces in the entire show is Marie's jacket. In our very first meeting our designer Rose Montgomery mentioned she was inspired by a picture of Marie Curie taken when she arrived in Paris in which she wore a striking black and white striped jacket. While that particular jacket would have looked out of place we did want to honour it in some way. Especially because this picture is credited to be Pierre Curies favourite picture of Marie, and was placed in his coffin after his death. Along came this gorgeous linen number... It echoes the shape of a classic Victorian piece, complete with high/low peplum in the back, but breathable and in modern sizing. While fully black, it features a white contrasting facing, which only peeps out on the rarest of occasions on stage. I adore these little flashes of meaning. Pierre Curie's costume was all about warmth and texture. The symphony of browns contrasts beautifully with Marie's stark black, while also highlighting his warm personality. Our favourite costume move here was to add a contemporary chore jacket to his wardrobe. It very visually puts him at odds with the establishment at the Sorbonne and that makes it all the more clear why he gravitates to fellow outcast Marie. Designs: Rose Montgomery Photo's: Pamela Raith

Finding Anne's (Marie's best friend) and Ruben's (radium factory boss) costumes proved most challenging, but ultimately most rewarding. Rose envisioned Anne as a down to earth, sensibly dressed girl from the countryside. As the skirt was key to form her characters look, we had it custom made from a sturdy textured linen blend to give it that hardwearing utility look, while adding some pintucks for extra interest and character. Her base look is completed by a puff sleeve blouse. Not finding the exact shade of grey we wanted, I decided to dye it myself. Her little cropped jacket was a lucky find from Vinted and struck the perfect balance between old/new. Ruben's costume is the one that developed the most during the process. The original design was much more conservative in colour and cut then the one we eventually decided on. We were inspired by Richard Meek's charismatic interpretation of Ruben to pursue a more modern version of the original design. After settling on green for the suit to echo the radium he becomes so obessed with, we fell in love with the textured print on this green suit. The more modern cut echoes his charismatic personality and how he's a favourite among the Sorbonne students. Designs: Rose Montgomery Photo's: Pamela Raith Costume maker skirt Anne: Cecilija Berg

Our factory worker costumes were a lot of fun to work on. We wanted to visualise the deterioration the workers experienced from their work with Radium and did that through costume more then anything . We gave each of them two identical aprons, in varying stages of breakdown. Designs: Rose Montgomery Photo's: Pamela Raith
