Maria de Rudenz is inspired by an episode of Matthew Gregory Lewis's gothic novel The Monk, and tells a gory story of deceit, murder, betrayal, and resurrection from the dead. Doing an opera for a company that loves all things Gothic meant an extraordinary opportunity to bring the drama. Nate Gibson's designs called for a multitude of textures, taking a cue from the beautiful Battersea arts centre venue. To achieve a high level of finish on a budget, we opted to hire most of our costumes, adding personal details wherever they made the most impact. Working with a double cast we had the joy of doing multiple interpretations of the same character. Even though technically both our Corrado's could have shared their costumes, we opted to differentiate them a bit, based on what suited them the best and what they felt more true to how they perceived their character. Our Matilde's costume was in some ways the most complex. She needed an entrance look, as well as a wedding look. Layering was the solution and with the simple addition of an overskirt and a cape, our Matilde goes from engaged to married! Costume and set design: Nate Gibson Photo's: Craig Fuller
