DEAD MAN WALKING
Guildhall School for Music and Drama
Anna Reid's designs for the costumes of this gripping piece about a nun and a convicted inmate on death row, set in the early 1980s focussed completely on believability. To offset her abstract set design, she wanted these people to feel as real as possible, through their clothes. That provided me with the perfect opportunity to not only hunt for some stunning true vintage finds, but also to take advantage of London's many charity shops. Our hope house mother's and children set the tone... As per Anna Reid's designs they are vibrant and fun. We meet them at Hope House, the charity where sister Helen works with her fellow sisters. The vibrancy of these mothers and children forms a stark contrast with the parents of the dead children and the prison life. I had a great time going wild with colour, pattern and scrunchies for this chorus. And my favourite part is that nearly all of it was either purchases from charity shops or second hand from Vinted! Giving lived in pieces a second home on stage is one of my favourite parts of the job. Designs: Anna Reid Photo's: David Monteith-Hodge @Photographise

The hopeful vibrancy of these mothers and children stands in stark contrast with the world of Joseph De Rocher, an inmate on death row. For Joseph and the prisoners we were able to re-use a lot of denim from previous productions, with some added second hand shirts. The perfect guard outfits where found and hired from Angels Costume Hire. Designs: Anna Reid Photo's: David Monteith-Hodge @Photographise
