ALBERT HERRING
Clonter Opera Theatre
Bettina John's costume designs for this modern opera that calls out the hypocrisies and absurdities of rural British life, called for a very specific colour palette. The combination of a 1940s aesthetic and the use of very specific colours, meant a lot of things were made especially for the production. That combined with some clever sourcing, made us achieve exactly what Bettina had designed. The women of the establishment were the biggest challenge in this production. The combination of very saturated colours and very specific silhouettes left us with no other choice then to make them, rather then source them. All three of the designs below were made by the costume team... An intense project with 72 pattern pieces in Florence's green military suit and 66 buttons in Lady Billow's purple suit. Albert's suit was a lucky high street find, it has a subtle sparkle which further highlighted a certain campness in his character. Nancy and the children features a combination of adapted highstreet finds and made to measure pieces. My very favourite was the pair of yellow 1940s dungarees, based on an original add sent to me by Bettina. Designs: Bettina John Photo's: Andrew Billington Photography
